It was undoubtedly one of the most magnificent sunsets we’ve experienced in recent memory. As the winter sun dipped behind the Chhatris of Orchha, we marveled at the sky’s changing hues from the shores of the Betwa River. Initially, following our trip to Khajuraho, my expectations for Orchha weren’t very high. We approached Orchha with an open mindset, ready to appreciate whatever experiences it presented. During our preparation for the visit, we discovered the numerous attractions this quaint town in Madhya Pradesh offers. Ultimately, after touring Orchha, we were completely charmed by this lesser-known gem in the Bundelkhand region of Madhya Pradesh.

A Brief History of Orchha

Orchha served as the capital of a prosperous kingdom under the Bundela Kings’ rule. The kingdom was established in the 16th century by Bundela Chief Rudra Pratap Singh, who moved his capital from Garh Kundar to Orchha, strategically located on the Betwa River. This location was chosen for its defensibility against Mughal invasions. The Bundelas originated from the Gaharwar Rajputs of Varanasi.

Nearly a decade later, Bir Singh Deo (1605 – 1627) ascended as the King of Orchha and became one of the most celebrated Bundela monarchs. During his rule, Orchha saw the peak of its political influence and architectural grandeur. He commissioned numerous forts, palaces, and monuments across Orchha, Datia, and Jhansi, and constructed several temples in Mathura and Varanasi, significantly spreading Bundeli architectural influences throughout Northern India.

Orchha remained the Bundela Dynasty’s capital from 1531 until 1783, after which the capital was relocated to Tikamgarh.

Under British governance, the region was incorporated into the Bundelkhand Agency. Following India’s independence, Vir Singh, the reigning monarch at the time, integrated his state into the Indian Union on January 1, 1950. The district then became part of the Vindhya Pradesh state, which was subsequently merged into Madhya Pradesh in 1956.

Our visit to Orchha took place during the chilly month of January, as part of a broader Madhya Pradesh excursion that began with stops in Gwalior and Morena, followed by Khajuraho. Upon arriving, Orchha appeared to be just another quaint Indian town. However, as we began to explore, we were captivated by its relaxed atmosphere. We dedicated two days to discovering most of the local attractions.

The name Orchha translates to ‘hidden,’ apt for a town brimming with fascinating sites, particularly for those with an interest in history. But even if history isn’t your passion, the sheer beauty of Orchha is bound to enchant you. Reaching Orchha

Orchha is situated in the Niwari district of Madhya Pradesh. To reach Orchha, you’ll typically pass through Jhansi as it houses the closest major railway station, about 20 km away, with a travel time of roughly 30 minutes.

Jhansi stands as a crucial hub in Central India’s railway network, offering connections to all major Indian cities. The train journey from Delhi to Jhansi lasts about five to six hours, and it’s advisable to book your tickets in advance.

For air travelers, the nearest airport is in Gwalior, which is 130 km away. Upon landing, you have the option to continue to Jhansi by train and then travel to Orchha by cab, or you can hire a private cab directly to Orchha from Gwalior. Bus services are also available from Gwalior to Orchha.

Since our journey started from Khajuraho, we opted for a train to Jhansi followed by a cab ride to Orchha.

Traveling to Orchha from Jhansi

From Jhansi, you have the option to hire a private auto or cab to reach Orchha, typically costing around INR 500. Additionally, buses depart from the Jhansi bus stand to Orchha regularly.

Exploring Orchha

Orchha is relatively compact, making it easy to explore the majority of its attractions on foot.

For further convenience, rickshaws and auto-rickshaws are available for navigating the town, with short rides typically ranging from INR 100 to 200.

For those who prefer cycling, bicycles and scooters are available for rent in Orchha, offering a unique way to see the town.

Upon arriving in this charming town, you’ll find plenty to explore. The Orchha Wildlife Sanctuary and numerous monuments are within a 5 km radius of the town center, making it feasible to plan a thorough visit over two days. The architecture here is predominantly a blend of Bundeli and Islamic styles, with fortified gates, or Darwazas, delineating the town’s boundaries.

While it’s tempting to hop between monuments snapping photos, the ideal way to experience Orchha is to immerse yourself in its ambiance. As you consider how long to stay, here are some key sites that you shouldn’t miss.

1. Orchha Fort Complex – A Must-Visit Attraction in Orchha

The Orchha Fort Complex stands as the most prominent landmark in the town of Orchha. This expansive complex is hard to miss and features a collection of palaces, gateways, gardens, stables, temples, and pavilions, dominating the town’s skyline.

Architectural Highlights of Orchha Fort Complex

Surrounded by sturdy walls, the complex houses four main palaces—Jahangir Mahal, Raja Mahal, Rai Praveen Mahal, and the Sheesh Mahal—along with numerous other significant structures. The Sheesh Mahal has been transformed into a boutique hotel. A striking feature is the Betwa River, serving as a natural moat, connected by an arched bridge to the fort. The variety of structures within the complex, built at different times by various rulers, showcases a rich tapestry of architectural styles with detailed archways, vibrant murals, and extensive chambers.

Exploring the Orchha Fort Complex is free of charge, though some monuments like the Raj Mahal and Jahangir Mahal have an entry fee.

Inside the Diwan-e-Aam

Upon entering the Orchha Fort Complex, the Diwan-e-Aam is usually the first stop. Constructed in the 17th century by Madhukar Shah, this hall is inspired by Mughal architecture and was used by the king for public meetings and administrative purposes. The hall is renowned for its exquisite ceiling paintings, reflecting the Bundela artistic style.

Raja Mahal’s Splendor

Next, visitors move to the Raja Mahal, begun in 1531 by Bharti Chand as a private residence. The palace’s rooms, painted in Bundela style, showcase vibrant murals depicting stories from the Ramayana and the avatars of Vishnu. A second courtyard added by Madhukar Shah introduces slight Mughal architectural influences with varied arch designs.

Jahangir Mahal’s Architectural Marvel

Jahangir Mahal is architecturally one of the most impressive buildings within the complex. Erected in 1610 by Bir Singh Deo, the palace served as a grand guest house commemorating Emperor Jahangir’s visit. Its large courtyard, intricate stone carvings, and a blend of Hindu and Islamic architectural elements highlight its grandeur.

As you leave the Jahangir Mahal, various other fascinating structures like the Unth Khana (camel stable) and the Rai Praveen Mahal, named after a celebrated beauty and courtesan of the time, await exploration. The Rai Praveen Mahal houses upper-level paintings that capture the courtesan’s allure.

The temple’s origin traces back to 1558, initiated by Madhukar Shah for his queen. However, the legend says the temple intended for Lord Rama’s idol remained vacant as the idol, once placed, could not be moved from the Rani Mahal, leading to the creation of the Ram Raja Temple. Today, the Chaturbhuj Temple houses idols of Radha-Krishna.

For those who don’t mind a bit of rain, the monsoon season from mid-July to September can also be a good time to visit. The rains bring a refreshing greenery to the town, enhancing its natural beauty.
